Active Body & Mind from Park Club17-Mar-2017
The Park Club Chatham continues to support adults with mental health difficulties to get active in Medway.
Active Body & Mind is a project based at Park Club Chatham and Ashford, Kent intended to support adults with mental health difficulties to lead healthier, more active lifestyles; the project came about after a successful bid through Sport England’s Small Grant’s funding stream.
Sport England’s Small Grants uses Lottery funding to make awards of between £300 and £10,000 to not-for-profit organisations to help young people, aged 14 and above, and adults take on and keep a sporting habit for life.
With 1 in 4 people experiencing mental health problems in the UK each year, the project will promote the positive benefits that physical activity can have in improving health and wellbeing.
Working in partnership with local mental health services SpeakUP CIC and MEGAN CIC to deliver the programme, the ‘Active Body and Mind’ project be made up of weekly exercise classes. With a gym buddy scheme and peer support sessions, this helps all participants to enjoy the benefits to their physical and mental wellbeing.
The exercise classes involve Health Walks, Circuits, Yoga and Studio Cycling. There are also tea/coffee peer support sessions that takes place after each class, led by SpeakUP CIC and MEGAN CIC. The Gym Buddy scheme also provides an opportunity for participants to bring a friend or a family member along to support them to increase their physical activity levels.
Active Body and Mind is part of the many schemes they are working to provide for the residents of Medway and Park Club are looking to provide another service
