Volunteering – Going That Extra Mile

Thinking about our volunteering ‘offer’ in different ways can help us to reach people who previously may not have thought that they had the time to spare – and the national initiative ‘Goodgym’ is a perfect example of this.

Goodgym are a community of runners that combine getting fit with doing good. They stop off on their runs to do physical tasks for community organisations and to support isolated older people with social visits and one-off tasks they can't do on their own.

Much of this model’s success is because it fits into the runners’ lives, and so it’s easier for them to commit for the longer term and to keep going.

What could this mean for your organisation?

This model is especially suited to helping with:

  • Physical tasks for community organisations.
  • Making social visits to isolated people (primarily older people – but why not consider expanding this to anyone who is socially isolated?).
  • Running missions for older people; gardening, changing lightbulbs and doing odd-jobs for people who struggle to do them alone.

Sounds interesting?

Then you’ll be pleased to know that we’ve already started talking to others about this – and here’s your invitation to join the conversation…

Rachael Noxon, Public Health Manager at Medway Council, has expressed an interest with Goodgym about having this model in Medway – she’s been told that they need a few more volunteers before it can be launched.

So if you think your organisation would like to get involved with this initiative, you can contact her by email at

Rachael is also extending local VCS organisations another invitation to go that extra mile, and to join her in the ‘Better Medway’ area at the Medway Mile event on 21st July. This will give you a great opportunity to meet with a multitude of potential volunteers who attend this event – and might also give you time to discuss Goodgym in more detail.

The theme for the Medway Mile is ‘Ten’, so as part of the event Rachel would also like to highlight ten volunteering opportunities that help tackle social isolation. So if your organisation has volunteering roles that help to alleviate social isolation, please can you let us know about them via this online form.

Don’t forget, if you need to fill any of your volunteering roles, you can promote them through the Medway Volunteer Network.
