Working Together to Safeguard Children - Guidance Updates for 2018

The Department for Education (DfE) has recently published updates to the official guidance which defines what child organisations and agencies should do to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children and young people under the age of 18.

The new 2018 guidance follows a government consultation, launched in October 2017, which set out the changes needed to support the new system of multi-agency safeguarding arrangements established by the Children and Social Work Act 2017.

The DfE have advised the updates are important to the previous version of the guidance first published in 2015.

Amongst the changes, key areas which differ from the 2015 guidance include:

  • Assessing need and providing help
  • Organisational responsibilities
  • Multi-agency safeguarding arrangements
  • Local and national child safeguarding practice reviews
  • Child death reviews

To help organisations the NSPCC has compiled a briefing that highlights the key changes in the new 2018 Working Together guidance.

At the time of writing, The DfE has also released the updated version of Keeping Children Safe in Education, which has been advised should be read alongside Working Together to Safeguard Children.

More information can be found on the DfE website.
