Hopes & Dreams, Hands and Hearts, and other Events in Medway

MVA have compiled a quick round up some of the local events that might be of interest to your service users that are taking place over the coming festive season and into the New Year.

Lighting up Medway’s Hopes & Dreams at The Pentagon Centre

Chatham-based artist Xtina Lamb has teamed up with Ideas Test to help Medway bring the light of Hopes & Dreams to The Pentagon Centre this holiday season.

Local arts organisation Ideas Test explain that where this year has seen many changes and challenges, they want to team up with ordinary - and extraordinary - people in Medway to create lanterns that will light Chatham High Street’s Shopping Centre throughout the holiday season.

The aim is to light up The Pentagon Centre throughout December 2020 and January 2021 with creations made by you!

You can take part by;

  • Watching Xtina’s how-to video on Ideas Test’s YouTube channel
  • Picking up a ‘How-To’ sheet from The Pentagon Centre
  • You can also Download the ‘How-To’ sheet from Ideas Test’s website
  • Sharing your creations on Social Media using the hashtag #HADPentagon

Hands and Hearts: Illustrated Stories of the Windrush generation in Kent and Medway

Medway African and Caribbean Association have recently launched “Hands and Hearts”: Illustrated Stories of the Windrush generation in Kent and Medway; a tribute to the Caribbean communities of Kent and Medway and their economic and cultural contribution to Europe.

Known for promoting an awareness of African and Caribbean culture, through their arts, educational and social programmes, the Medway African and Caribbean Association (MACA) are celebrating the Caribbean communities of Kent and Medway, and their economic and cultural contribution to Europe, through a collection of excerpts from stories of the Windrush generation, and of one of the most recognisable periods in modern British history.

The organisers say the stories from the Windrush generation have been captured and created into some beautiful illustrations, and that the stories provide a fascinating insight into their experiences over the years.

For more information, visit the MACA website where you can watch the 25 minute film for free.

Arriving in Medway 2021 - Ebb and Flow Festival

Sun Pier House and Intra Arts have joined forces to bring the stories and history of their local area to life with a new festival launching in 2021.

In 1994 the area from Sun Pier, Chatham to Star Hill, Rochester was recognised and designated with Conservation Area status for its unique heritage and historic fabric.

Conceived by Sun Pier House CIC, and in partnership with Intra Arts, Ebb & Flow is an arts programme and festival commissioned by Creative Estuary.

The organisers say activities are taking place over a number of months in the run up to a celebratory weekend of events from 21st to 23rd May 2021, as part of Estuary Festival 2021.

For more information and to how to take part, visit the festival’s website.
